Crafting with Cricut

I love to craft. One of my favorite past times is getting together with my daughter, Donna, and crafting. Before Covid hit we used to go to DIY workshops and create. Our walls are covered with the beautiful things we created. When Covid hit, we used to get together and diy outside. It was a monthly event. We decoupaged, stencilled and painted, and created our own wood designs. Stencilling was limited to what we could order online.

We were making cruise door signs the other day, and I was freehanding the text and thought wouldn’t it be nice if we could create our own stencils. With that thought, I researched cutting machines. I know I’m a bit late for the party as cricut machines have been around since 2005 but “better late than never”! I did some research and decided to purchase the Cricut Explore 3.

While waiting for my Cricut to arrive, I had to find a place to set it up. Since I hope to use it in business eventually, I dedicated a desk in my office for the cricut, a laptop, and supplies. I’ve watched quite a few YouTube videos. I had no clue that Cricut could do as much as it does. So far to date, I have made stencils, decals, and even done some cutting to make bookmarks. Here are some of the things I have made so far:

My daughter recommended I go to Goodwill and check out wood items that I can repurpose. On Sunday I visited my local Goodwill and felt like I hit the jackpot! I’m not sure yet what I am going to do with them. First a little paint and then I’'ll stencil! I love the vertical aqua sign. Once I figure a place to hang it, I’ll decide what to do with it.

The more I learn about Cricut, the more amazed I am as to what it can do. It’s a bit overwhelming at times. I’ve been watching videos and high recommend Jennifer Maker’s tutorials. She has free turorials on her websites and lots of fun projects as well.

If you are already using a Cricut, I’d love to see what you are creating.

Susan Newberry

Hi, I’m Susan! I’ve spent the last 10 years building my online company. I’ve always loved everything to do with design. In fact, after raising my kids, I decided to go to school and get my degree in Interior Design. While running my own interior design company, I started teaching and found that teaching was what I really loved. Combine that with Interior Design and well, you could say I was on cloud nine. I always loved the technical side of design which led me to graphic design and after studying graphic design, I was encouraged to open an Etsy shop to sell some of my creations. With my attention to detail and being somewhat of a perfectionist, graphic design made perfect sense. In December of 2018, I decided to retire from teaching and devote myself full time to my business and I haven’t looked back since! I love designing art for the home and would love to create something special for you.

It’s true what they say, “Love what you do, and you will never work a day in your life.”
