Let It Snow
If you live in Georgia, you know that snow is quite an event here. Ever since Snowmageddon of 2014, people have become more cautious when it comes to snow. People in the north might laugh at us, but on that day, January 28, 2014, with only about 2-3 inches of snow, Atlanta was literally shut down. Unfortunately, businesses and schools did not heed the warning and continued to open. I remember it well because I was teaching at the time. Fortunately, I was at home; I can’t remember if my school closed and I stayed home or if I simply chose to stay home, but I was safe. Motorists were stranded, and some of my students told me that it took them over 24 hours to get home. Many gave up their vehicles and walked. It was a mess.
A few years later, on December 8 and 9, 2017, we had another significant snow event. Seven inches fell in some areas. Fortunately, that snow fell on a Friday night, so Atlantans were better able to cope. I remember it well because my daughter and granddaughter came to stay with us rather than try to get home.
On January 17, 2018, we experienced another significant snow event, this time with about 2 ½ inches of snow.
Today, January 10, 2025, we have received 2 to 3 inches of snow so far, and light snow and freezing rain continue to fall. The forecast is for that to continue until about 11:00 this evening. Freezing rain and sleet can be problematic in Atlanta. We have experienced ice storms before that made driving treacherous and caused power outages. Hopefully, that won't be the case this time. Regardless of what happens, I am grateful that my family is safe and at home.
As a child, I remember looking out my window at night, watching the snow come down and hoping the roads wouldn’t be plowed so school would be canceled. That was in Needham, a suburb of Boston. And guess what? Most of the time, the roads would be plowed, and off to school we went.
Since moving to Atlanta in 1970, I have enjoyed snow days. I remember when my kids were little, going out to play in the snow. Now that I am older, I prefer to enjoy the snow from inside, where it is warm and toasty.
Thanks for letting me share my snow story with you.
Until next time…
