How to Use Texture in Interior Design

The use of texture in interior design is a very important design element.  Texture is both physical (actual) and visual (implied).  Texture can be seen on the fabrics for your furniture and your window treatments, your decorative pillows and rugs, even your walls, ceilings, and floors.  Texture adds dimension, depth and character to a space. When you add texture to various surfaces and fixtures you can actually influence the way people feel when visiting your home.  For example did you know that smooth textures are more formal while rough textures are more casual.

Here are two beautiful bedrooms that have a ton of texture;  just look at that beautiful stone walls and wood ceilings in these two bedrooms.

While this beautiful bedroom has more of a formal feel.

Smooth surfaces are easier to clean but show more dirt as in this sleek and modern kitchen.

Rough textures are harder to clean but show less dirt as in this very comfortable living room.

A great way to add texture to a space is through faux finishing like this beautiful distressed plaster wall.

Here is an interesting way to add texture to your space with this concrete wallpaper by Piet Boon.

In this space by Joanna Gaines of HGTV's Fixer Upper, Joanna has mixed smooth (the floor) with rough (the beams) to get this beautiful uncluttered, family friendly space.

So don't be afraid to use texture in your spaces; in fact, embrace it.  Use texture in conjunction with pattern in your space.  They are both very important design elements.

So whether your personal style leans toward contemporary or casual, formal or informal, texture can add depth and interest to your space.
