Design Elements - 6 Tips for Mixing Patterns
A pattern is formed when shapes are grouped together. Patterns can be combinations of one or more of the four basic types of shapes: natural, stylistic, geometric, and abstract.
Mixing patterns in a space is a great way to add interest, color, and depth while giving your space a custom look. Scale should be compatible yet varied. In other words, mix large with small. By incorporating varying scales to the space, the prints won't compete with one another.
Tip One: Large patterns work best on large items, such as the wall, window treatment or area rug. Notice how great this large scale wallpaper works on this bedroom accent wall.
Tip Two: A medium pattern is better suited to smaller items such as accent pieces like this chair in the living space designed by Sarah Richardson.
Tip Three: Unite your patterns with color like these cushion in this banquette.
Tip Four: Use solids in conjunction with your patterns. Pull out the main color(s) from your pattern like this colorful living space.
Tip Five: Don't be afraid to mix patterns on furniture. I love this chair I found on Etsy.
