Your Decorating Personality
Did you know that your home can reveal a lot about you? Your home reflects your personality, just like your clothing does.
Here are some questions that you should ask yourself when determining your decoration style.
Are you casual or are you more formal? Do you like things that are lined up and symmetrical (the same on both sides) or do you prefer more of an asymmetrical look (different but balanced)? Do you like furniture that matches like a dining room or bedroom suite, or do you prefer mixing it up a bit with different furniture pieces, from different eras and design styles?
Do you like color or are you more neutral? Do you like mixing bright colors or do you prefer quiet tones of beige and gray? Do you prefer warm or cool colors?
What does your choice of artwork say about you? Are you bold or subdued in your choice of art? Are your walls full of artwork or do you prefer just a few select pieces? Do you prefer items that you have collected from your travels? Do floral designs make you happy? Do you fill your space with family pictures that make you feel good? Whatever your choice, is it cohesive with your decorating style?
While there are many unique decorating styles (I found from 7 to 21 with a quick search on the web), I believe style can be divided into 2 main categories – casual/informal and formal.
Casual/Informal Style
Prefers mismatched furniture
Neutral soft colors on the walls
Natural materials such as stone, leather, and wood
Natural fabrics such as wool and cotton
Asymmetrical balance – no mirror image here
A relaxed and comfortable feel
Lots of comfy pillows
Artwork that is meaningful to you
Baskets and rattan elements
Simple, light, and airy window treatments – nothing fussy
formal style
Traditional style is preferred - prefers furniture pieces that match in style and in color
The use of elegant elements – rich rugs, marble accents, elegant mirrors
The use of rich, classic fabrics
Formal window treatments
Symmetrical balance is preferred
A strong focal point such as a fireplace or window
Ceiling detail
I think most of us fit in the casual/informal category today. Most of us like to live in our homes. We want to use every room in the house. Gone are the formal dining rooms and living rooms. Window treatments are much more casual and airier, less formal. Over the next few weeks, we’ll discuss each style in more detail as well as common decorating mistakes and how to fix them.
