What is Spiral Art?

Spiral art is not a new art form. In fact, spirals are among the oldest shapes found in primitive artwork dating back to ancient civilizations. Spirals have been used in every ancient culture throughout the world, including ancient Greece. The spiral has been used in art and architecture since ancient times. Early civilizations used spirals as decorative motifs on pottery and architecture. Spirals were used in the design of columns, staircase, domes, and even furniture. For example, who hasn’t seen a beautiful spiral staircase and twisted rope turnings on furniture legs. Van Gogh used spirals in his famous “Starry Night” painting.

SPIRALS IN NATURE

Interstingly, spirals are one of nature’s most common configruations. There are spirals in rocks and in plants and even animals. Think about snail shells, flower petals, pine cones, curly hair, and galaxies. They are all spiral shaped! Our galaxy - the milky way - is a giant spiral. Amazing!

The Spiral Betty

The latest thing to hit the craft world is the Spiral Betty. You may have seen the design popping up all over the internet. If not, just do a google search and see what pops up. This is a fun concept where you convert a photo or image into a single spiral line. The finished look is similar to the grooves in a vinyl record. In the Cricut world, spiral betty designs seem to be very popular. There is even a website to convert your image into spiral art.

CRICUT SPIRAL BETTY

I have to be honest; I had not tried making a spiral Betty with my Cricut Explorer until I wrote this article. It wasn’t as easy as I thought. It took me three tries and about 2 hours to create. I started out trying to make one to fit an 8 x 8 shadow box frame but after 2 tries, I decided to try one at 12x12. The larger size was definitely much easier and weeding was easy at the larger size. Would I do it again? Hmmm, not sure. Maybe. But if you have a cricut and want to give it a try, I recommend checking out Jennifer Maker for her tutorial. Her tutorial is from 2021 which shows I’m a little behind what’s going on in the Cricut world but better late than never I always say. Anyway, Jennifer’s tutorials are the best when it comes to learning how to use your cricut. If you’ve made a spiral betty with your cricut, I’d love to see it!

GRAPHIC SPIRAL ART

I prefer creating my spiral art with PhotoShop. I love the results. Besides Spiral Bettys, there are lots of other spiral designs. Here are a few of my spiral designs. My record album designs have been extremely popular. They make great wedding and anniversary gifts. Let me know what you think…

Susan Newberry

Hi, I’m Susan! I’ve spent the last 10 years building my online company. I’ve always loved everything to do with design. In fact, after raising my kids, I decided to go to school and get my degree in Interior Design. While running my own interior design company, I started teaching and found that teaching was what I really loved. Combine that with Interior Design and well, you could say I was on cloud nine. I always loved the technical side of design which led me to graphic design and after studying graphic design, I was encouraged to open an Etsy shop to sell some of my creations. With my attention to detail and being somewhat of a perfectionist, graphic design made perfect sense. In December of 2018, I decided to retire from teaching and devote myself full time to my business and I haven’t looked back since! I love designing art for the home and would love to create something special for you.

It’s true what they say, “Love what you do, and you will never work a day in your life.”
