The Rule of Threes

Have you heard about the rule of threes in decorating? Three is the magic number when arranging items. For some reason our brains prefer looking at odd numbers rather than even numbers.  Odd numbers force our eyes to move around the group and then by extension, the room. While even numbers create symmetry, odd numbers create interest. When we decorate with odd numbers we create designs that are fun, casual, and young.

What does this rule of threes (and as an extension all odd numbers - 3 - 5 - 7 - 9) apply to?

Furniture

Think about furniture arranging. When you are decorating a living room, there’s a reason we purchase a sofa and two chairs. Maybe it’s two sofas and one chair. Just remember to select items that are similar in size and style.

Color

The rule of three also applies to color as well. Next time you’re choosing colors for your room think in terms of 3 colors. Break that down even further with the 60 - 30 - 10 rule. 60% for the main color, 30% for the secondary color, and 10% for the accent color. Well what does that mean? The main color would be the color you select for your walls. The secondary color could be an accent wall or the main color you select for your furniture. The accent color could be what you select for your pillows and accessories. This color combination can be bold or it can be calm (neutral). Just remember to select colors that are pleasing to the eye.

Accessories

When decorating with accessories remember the rule of threes. When grouping accessories, group three similar items but of different sizes or group three different items for interest. When grouping books think in terms of three by grouping stacks of three. Using candles? Vary shapes and sizes for the best look.

Our focus today is on displaying artwork. If you are doing a grouping always aim for an odd number of items unless you are going for a formal symmetrical look. But if you are looking for a fun, creative, and casual look odd is better than even.
