Print or Canvas: How to Choose (Part Two)

Print or canvas 2.jpg

In my last post, I explained the differences between prints and canvases.. Today’s post will discuss the pros and cons of each type of print. Hopefully this will help you to make your decision.

Remember whether you choose print or canvas is a personal decision and is based on many things including: budget, finish desired, what you are hanging and where you are hanging.

PRINTS

PROS

  1. Prints are relatively inexpensive.

  2. There are a wide variety of frames available to complement your print at all price points.

  3. Prints can be changed out frequently - as your child grows, seasonally, etc.

  4. Prints work great on a gallery wall.

CONS

  1. Frames can add quite a bit to the overall price and should match the overall decor of your space.

  2. Prints are commonplace.

  3. Because they are under glass, there is often a glare.

  4. Larger sizes are heavy and expensive.

  5. Larger sizes will be harder to hang.

CANVAS PRINTS

PROS

  1. All images work well on canvas.

  2. They are glare free.

  3. Can take on many looks - rustic, farmhouse, chalkboard.

  4. Weigh much less than framed prints.

  5. Come ready to hang - no frame needed.

  6. Can be installed in semi-humid areas such as bathrooms.

  7. Can work well in any style decor.

  8. Creative multi-panel options available.

  9. Can add a frame.

CONS

  1. Texture of canvas can sometimes be distracting

  2. Canvases are not waterproof or scratch resistant

  3. Photograph is permanent (unlike photo that can be changed out)

In Conclusion

At the end of the day, it really depends upon what you like, your budget, and your needs. Some people will always prefer the traditional look of a framed print. Framed prints are timeless and will never go out of style. Others prefer the frameless look of a canvas and the flexibility of having large or multi-panel artwork in their space.

Hopefully, I have explained the differences between print and canvas and the pros and cons of each. If you missed part one of this series, please be sure to check it out here.

Thanks for stopping by.

Until next time…

Hi, I’m Susan! I’ve spent the last 10 years building my online company. I’ve always loved everything to do with design. In fact, after raising my kids, I decided to go to school and get my degree in Interior Design. While running my own interior design company, I started teaching and found that teaching was what I really loved. Combine that with Interior Design and well, you could say I was on cloud nine. I always loved the technical side of design which led me to graphic design and after studying graphic design, I was encouraged to open an Etsy shop to sell some of my creations. With my attention to detail and being somewhat of a perfectionist, graphic design made perfect sense. In December of 2018, I decided to retire from teaching and devote myself full time to my business and I haven’t looked back since! I love designing art for the home and would love to create something special for you.

It’s true what they say, “Love what you do, and you will never work a day in your life.”
