Decorating With Throw Blankets

What is a throw blanket?

A throw blanket is a blanket that you can literally throw on your bed, your sofa, or a chair. Usually smaller than a standard bed blanket, throw blankets come in many different sizes. Throw blankets are a way to add color and texture to your space. Throw blankets can accessorize and keep your warm in any room.

Here’s a handy guide to compare sizes.

Types of Throw Blankets

There are many different types of throw blankets out there included knitted blankets, faux fur blankets, wool blankets, woven cotton, sherpa, jersey, and minky blankets.

Knitted Throw Blankets are wonderful whether you knit them or they are machine made. They vary from loosely to tightly woven and can add unique texture to your space. Because of their heavy weight they are better suited for cold months.

Faux Fur Throws are luxurious and can be shaggy and fluffy or cropped and fuzzy. They are soft and very warm.

Fleece Blankets are insulating blankets made of tightly twisted polyester. Fleece blankets are soft and comfortable and retain heat well.

Minky Blankets are made of 100% polyester, which is thicker and plusher than fleece. Minky blankets are super soft and a great choice for baby blankets. They stay softer longer than typical blankets. Minky blankets are very easy to care for.

Sherpa Blankets are also 100% polyester and have a sherpa backing. Sherpa fabric is 100% synthetic fabric designed to look and feel like wool from a sheep. Sherpa blankets (a type of fleece blanket) tend to be softer and warmer than standard fleece blankets.

Woven Cotton Blankets are make of 100% cotton yarn with a colorful fringe that frames your image. They are great for cuddling up on your sofa and can even be hung on the wall.

The Perfect Gift

Throw blankets make a perfect gift that everyone loves. Nothing says “the perfect gift” like a personalized custom blanket.

As Décor

There are many ways to style a throw. For a casual look, drape your throw over the back of a chair or a sofa. Throw one over your ottoman. It’s ok if it drapes on the floor slightly.

If you prefer a neater look, fold your throw over the arm of a chair or over the back of your sofa.

Put folded or rolled throws in a woven basket. You can even hang one over the edge for a more casual look.

If you prefer to store them, use a blanket ladder to display your throws and keep them organized. You can make your own or find lots of different styles on Etsy, and home décor stores like TJ Maxx and Wayfair.

Put one on the edge of the bed. Whether you prefer to fold it neatly or toss it casually, throws are a great way to bring color, texture and warmth to your bedroom. Don’t be afraid to layer them for a more casual look.

You can also hang a blanket on the wall so everyone can enjoy it.

Susan Newberry

Hi, I’m Susan! I’ve spent the last 10 years building my online company. I’ve always loved everything to do with design. In fact, after raising my kids, I decided to go to school and get my degree in Interior Design. While running my own interior design company, I started teaching and found that teaching was what I really loved. Combine that with Interior Design and well, you could say I was on cloud nine. I always loved the technical side of design which led me to graphic design and after studying graphic design, I was encouraged to open an Etsy shop to sell some of my creations. With my attention to detail and being somewhat of a perfectionist, graphic design made perfect sense. In December of 2018, I decided to retire from teaching and devote myself full time to my business and I haven’t looked back since! I love designing art for the home and would love to create something special for you.

It’s true what they say, “Love what you do, and you will never work a day in your life.”
