Did you know that the third Sunday of every July is National Ice Cream Day and that the month of July is National Ice Cream Month? This little known holiday was declared by President Ronald Reagan back in 1984 to promote the economic well-being of the U.S. dairy industry. Who knew? What better time than summer time to eat and enjoy ice cream. But then, ice cream is good any time of the year!

Here are a few more unknown facts about ice cream:

  • Ice cream was first introduced into the United States by Quaker colonists who brought their ice cream recipes with them.  The Quakers sold their ice cream in shops in New York and other cities during the colonial era.
  • In 1873, Dolly Madison severed ice cream at the Inaugural Ball.
  • In 1832, African American confectioner, Augustus Jackson, created multiple ice cream recipes in additional to a superior technique to manufacture ice cream.
  • In 1843 in Philadelphian, Nancy Johnson, received the first U.S. patent for a small-scale hand-cranked ice cream freezer.
  • In 1920, Harry Burt introduced ice cream trucks.

All I have to say is thank you, thank you, thank you. So whether your taste runs towards vanilla (like me) or chocolate, or perhaps you prefer something more exotic, be sure to have some ice cream today. After all, it's National Ice Cream Day! Enjoy!
