How to Hang artwork - a few tips
Are you afraid to hang artwork? Not quite sure how to do it? Adding artwork is one way to show your personality in your home. Whether you prefer fine art, farmhouse style art, or family portraits is really up to you. Once you know what you like, how do you know how to hang your artwork. Today I’ll share some guidelines on hanging art. Specifically, what size do you buy? How high do you hang it?
What size is best?
One of the biggest mistakes made is hanging artwork that is too small for the space. Today we’ll discuss some guidelines for hanging artwork.
Another mistake a lot of people make is to hang their artwork too high. What height is right? Well, it really depends on where you are hanging it. Generally we recommend that art be hung at eye level and that means hanging the center of the piece between 5 feet and 5 and a half feet.
IN THE LIVING ROOM
The focal point in the living room is the sofa so when adding artwork to your living room so start there. Sofas vary in size from 6 feet to 8 feet long. Love seats are a bit smaller at 4 to 6 feet. Don’t hang your artwork too high. Ideally your art should be about 6 - 8 inches above the sofa for the best look (Wayfair).
IN THE BEDROOM
The bedroom is a place of relaxation so your artwork should reflect that. The artwork you choose can set the mood for your room. Your bed is the focal point of the room so start there. The biggest mistake people make is to hang artwork that is too small. A queen bed is 60” wide and a king is 76” so keep that in mind when selecting artwork. You can also create groupings but don’t overdo it. Remember less is more. You don’t need to have art on every wall of your space. Remember other accessories that work as well like oversized mirrors (Houzz).
IN THE DINING ROOM
There are so many options for artwork in the dining room, including mirrors, vintage signs, and family photography. Whatever you select remember that you will be viewing them from a seated position. Keep the size of the table in mind when making your selections (HGTV).
IN THE ENTRY
When people walk into your foyer, they are getting a first impression of your home. Here’s your chance to set the stage for what is to come. Don’t forget the importance of the correct wall color and furniture too. You can add character with a gallery wall. Try mixing family pictures with inspirational sayings that mean a lot to your family. Have a little fun but as always keep proportion in mind.
