Decorating A Nursery

Decorating a baby’s room can be a lot of fun. Just ask any expectant mother. But it can also bring a little bit of stress. Where to start?

BUDGET

First things first…decide on a budget. That will help with selecting furniture items and accessories.

THEME & STYLE

Next, choose a theme and style for your child’s room. It is no longer necessary to know the sex of the child as more and more nurseries are gender neutral. However, if you wish to design specifically for a boy or girl, you should go for it. Consider the style of your home when designing the nursery. If you still don’t know what to do check out Pinterest for ideas. You will find thousands of ideas to inspire and guide you.

Ask yourself if you want the space to be able to grow with the child. Your baby won’t care! If you do want the space to grow with your child, you might want to think about incorporating a neutral palette rather than gender-specific colors.

As for the theme, there are so many nursery themes to select from: boho, coastal, jungle, and princess to name a few. Boho and coastal will grow with the child while jungle and princess definitely will have an expiration date!

PAINT

Consider getting creative with paint. When my kids and grandkids were babies I painted murals in their rooms but these murals were definitely age specific. You can get creative with stripes on the wall, paint geometric shapes, or use a stencil to paint floral designs. You can go as subtle or as bold as you want with your choice of colors. Don’t be afraid to DIY. This goes for other items as well.

STORAGE

Consider storage. It’s a good idea to keep things at the child’s height. You will want plenty of baskets for toys. Also drawer organizers for those diapers, lotions and creams you’ll need handy, and a book area with shelving which will help your child develop their love for reading.

MULTI-USE FURNITURE

Consider multi-use furniture that will grow with baby. For example, cribs become toddler beds, which in turn become full size beds. Dressers can double as a changing area. And don’t forget a comfy chair for mom. You will be spending countless hours there nursing and soothing baby!

WORK AREA

Can you incorporate a work area that works with their age and then grows with them? What about a play area that encourages play and creativity?

WINDOW COVERINGS

Consider window coverings. You may want to layer your treatments to keep out the light and to help baby sleep. Blackout blinds work wonders.

ARTWORK

ARTWORK BY SNDPRINTABLES

Artwork is a great way to decorate a space, especially if you have chosen to go with a more neutral space. Can you afford a statement piece that will help set the theme of the room? If not several smaller pieces will do. Artwork is a great way to bring color to the room, especially if you have chosen a neutral color palette.

LIGHTING

Lighting is important in any room but especially in a nursery. Here like in all spaces, it’s a good idea to layer your lighting. That means having more than just one overhead light! The use of dimmers is a great idea in a nursery for those evenings when you are trying to wind down and get baby ready for bed.

SAFETY

Last but not least, be sure to baby proof the space. Get down on all fours and check that outlets are covered. Make sure there are no cords that can be pulled once baby becomes a toddler. Is there a smoke detector in the nursery or right outside the nursery? You might want to review the Parent Checklist from the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics).

Susan Newberry

Hi, I’m Susan! I’ve spent the last 10 years building my online company. I’ve always loved everything to do with design. In fact, after raising my kids, I decided to go to school and get my degree in Interior Design. While running my own interior design company, I started teaching and found that teaching was what I really loved. Combine that with Interior Design and well, you could say I was on cloud nine. I always loved the technical side of design which led me to graphic design and after studying graphic design, I was encouraged to open an Etsy shop to sell some of my creations. With my attention to detail and being somewhat of a perfectionist, graphic design made perfect sense. In December of 2018, I decided to retire from teaching and devote myself full time to my business and I haven’t looked back since! I love designing art for the home and would love to create something special for you.

It’s true what they say, “Love what you do, and you will never work a day in your life.”
