Choosing Kitchen Cabinets

DIY

One of the first step in any kitchen redo is to figure out what kind of kitchen cabinets that you want.  There are a lot of factors that should go into this decision.  Cost, color, style, and type are just a few of the decisions that have to be made.

Here are some of the terms you need to understand before undertaking any kitchen remodel:

CABINET TYPES

Ready to assemble cabinets are just that - you  have to put them together; great for the do-it- yourselfer.

In stock cabinets are ready to assemble and in stock at your local big box store - come in limited finishes; paintable and good for the do-it-yourselfer.

Semi-custom or standard cabinets get ordered and come in a variety of door styles, wood types, and finishes; you can have them installed or install them yourself.

Custom cabinets are made to your specifications.  The quality depends on who makes them, how they are made, and the construction methods used.  They can be very expensive or not so much!

CABINET CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

MDF or Plywood construction?

CABINET MATERIALS

  • Thermafoil
  • Laminate
  • Veneer
  • Wood

FRAMED VS. FRAMELESS

Have I lost you yet?

Frameless cabinets have a contemporary feel and are very popular in Europe.  The door sits right on the cabinet box so when looking at the doors and the drawers you see almost no cabinet box.

Framed cabinets have a more traditional look, and look like they have a "frame" around each door.  Think of a picture frame.

Did you think I was going to talk about color and style?  That's the easy part.  The first thing you have to decide is what you can afford and if you are going to do all the work, some of the work, or none of the work.

Choosing kitchen cabinets is not something to be done overnight because they are so darn expensive.  So take the time and do your homework. There is plenty of information on the web to help you make a wise decision or better yet, talk to a kitchen designer so you can make the best decision for you and your family.  Remember you will be living with them for quite some time.

Next time we'll talk about color and style.

Thanks for stopping by...

Until next time,

Hi, I’m Susan! I’ve spent the last 10 years building my online company. I’ve always loved everything to do with design. In fact, after raising my kids, I decided to go to school and get my degree in Interior Design. While running my own interior design company, I started teaching and found that teaching was what I really loved. Combine that with Interior Design and well, you could say I was on cloud nine. I always loved the technical side of design which led me to graphic design and after studying graphic design, I was encouraged to open an Etsy shop to sell some of my creations. With my attention to detail and being somewhat of a perfectionist, graphic design made perfect sense. In December of 2018, I decided to retire from teaching and devote myself full time to my business and I haven’t looked back since! I love designing art for the home and would love to create something special for you.

It’s true what they say, “Love what you do, and you will never work a day in your life.”
