Casual Interior Decorating Style

CASUAL FOR THE WAY WE LIVE TODAY

What is casual interior design? When I think of casual design, I think of buzz words like comfy, cozy, and inviting. You may have heard terms like Modern Casual and California Casual.

MODERN CASUAL - Artwork by Susan Newberry Designs

Modern Casual combines the look of modern, a style relative to the 20th century which features sleek, clean lines with more casual elements. Gone are the traditional elements of earlier times. Moldings are simpler, floor plans are open. Modern casual marries contemporary clean line furnishings with muted colors and rustic elements for a chic but lived-in look.

Characteristics of Modern Casual

  • Sleek lines

  • Simple moldings

  • Muted colors or contrasting colors

  • The use of texture with rustic elements such as shiplap, tiled walls, and wood floors.

  • Less is more

CALIFORNIA CASUAL - Artwork by Susan Newberry Designs

California Casual is another style that you might have heard of. California Casual combines the best of modern, rustic, and coastal. Key elements include informal furniture and natural materials. This style is light and airy, bringing the outside in. Furniture is comfortable and fabrics are natural. The colors are soft and neutral. One of the most important elements of this design style is bringing in natural elements of the coast.

Characteristics of California Casual

  • White or light walls – add color through accessories but keep it light. Blues, greens, and aquas are popular colors in California Coastal design.

  • Natural textures such as rattan, wicker, wood, and cotton.

  • Light and airy - Natural light is key here; use mirrors to reflect the light

  • Less is more

Did you notice the similarities in both styles and that “less is more” is basic to both styles of design? Keep accessories simple and cut down on clutter. Spaces today are less fussy and more comfortable. An uncluttered space will make you feel relaxed and allow you to enjoy the true beauty of the space. We all have stuff we love and maybe the thought of simplifying is just too much for you to think about. Think about the things you have. Do they bring you joy? Do they serve a purpose? If the answer is no, get rid of them. Donate, sell or give them away. Need help? Hire a local organizer or interior designer.

So whether you prefer Modern Casual or California Casual, your space should be functional, comfortable, and inviting.

Hi, I’m Susan! I’ve spent the last 10 years building my online company. I’ve always loved everything to do with design. In fact, after raising my kids, I decided to go to school and get my degree in Interior Design. While running my own interior design company, I started teaching and found that teaching was what I really loved. Combine that with Interior Design and well, you could say I was on cloud nine. I always loved the technical side of design which led me to graphic design and after studying graphic design, I was encouraged to open an Etsy shop to sell some of my creations. With my attention to detail and being somewhat of a perfectionist, graphic design made perfect sense. In December of 2018, I decided to retire from teaching and devote myself full time to my business and I haven’t looked back since! I love designing art for the home and would love to create something special for you.

It’s true what they say, “Love what you do, and you will never work a day in your life.”
