All About Window Treatments

Window-treatments.jpg

Window treatment design has always been one of my favorite things to do when I was a designer. Over the years I have made my share of window treatments. I've revamped store bought window treatments, made curtains from sheets and even out of canvas drop cloths. I've made window treatments from just every type of fabric including silk and cotton. I've made cornices, valances, Roman shades (workable and mock), roller shades and my all time favorite, inverted pleat draperies. I don't believe that a room is completely finished until the windows are dressed!

There are many types of window treatments available today. If all you need is a topper, valances, cornices, and shades will do the trick. Window treatments can be functional or just complement your window.

Here are some examples of window toppers...

Maybe you prefer full length drapery. Just a word of advise: Take your window treatments all the way up to the ceiling or crown molding (within 2" is best). This will make your walls look taller. Make sure you bring the bottom of the window treatments all the way to the floor. If you have an 8' ceiling, choose 96" window treatments. You may have to hem them but better too long than too short.

To puddle or not to puddle, that is the question. For a romantic look, puddle your window treatments. Just make sure your window treatments aren't too heavy.

A few more tips...

  • Be sure to iron your window treatments.
  • Select hardware that complements your window treatment.
  • Hang wide and high to enlarge the look of the window.

So don't leave your windows undressed! I hope you found some inspiration today.

Thanks for stopping by.

Until next time...
