Twelve classic design trends that will never go out of style (Part II)

Remember avocado green and harvest gold of the 70s? What about shag wall to wall carpet? Glass blocks? Florals everywhere? Can you think of some other styles that have come and gone. When they’re here, we love them but when they are gone, we say good riddance!

Let’s continue our discussion on twelve classic design trends that are here to stay. Last time we talked about:

  1. White Kitchens

  2. Hardwood Flooring

  3. Open Spaces

  4. Neutral Walls

  5. Area Rugs

  6. Good Lighting

In this edition of my blog, we’ll discuss my next six favorite trends that are here to stay:

  1. Vintage Touches

  2. Oversized Mirrors

  3. Minimalism

  4. Black and White

  5. Built-in Shelving

  6. Front Door Appeal

VINTAGE TOUCHES

Design Sponge

Whether you call it vintage, retro, or farmhouse, adding vintage touches to your decor adds warmth and a sense of comfort to your space. Look for pieces that mean something to you, that shout out to yesteryear. Choose well made pieces, pieces that complement your other items. Vintage touches can be the focal point of your space if done right like the antique Victorian sink and sideboard with soapstone counters above.

OVERSIZED MIRRORS

The Design Chaser

Oversized mirrors not only add a decorative touch to your space but can create the illusion of space as well as amplify the light in the room. Oversized mirrors work well in a space that has high ceilings. They are perfect for bedrooms. Depending on your design style, oversized mirrors can add a vintage touch or a bit of Hollywood Glam. They can be hung on the wall or lean against the wall.

MINIMALISM

“Less is more.” You’ve probably heard the phrase. The phrase was coined in 1947 by Mies Van Der Rohe, one of the founders of modern architecture and a proponent of simplicity of style. What does it mean for us today? Minimalism is about functionality. Minimalism works well with contemporary design. There are many benefits to minimalism including less clutter, less stuff, and a clean and neat environment. What it doesn’t mean is stark and cold. To learn more about this concept, check out this article in Freshhome. For more on the idea of minimalism, check out this article on Scandinavian design which is all about creating simple interiors, clean lines, soft and warm lighting and lots of texture from Land of Rugs.

BLACK AND WHITE

ELLEDECOR

Decorating with black and white is timeless and classic. Black and white is a color combination that never goes out of style. It is modern and can add a bit of sophistication and drama to your space. I once heard that each room should have a touch of black so even if your room is colorful or neutral, think about adding some black for sophistication. If you are brave enough to use just black and white in your space, why not add a touch of color such as yellow, aqua, or red for interest (The Spruce).

BUILT-IN SHELVING

PIXABAY

Built-ins are not just for books these days. One of the easiest ways to add value to your home is through built in cabinetry. Who wouldn’t want a closet like the one pictured above? Built-ins can do so much more. Built-ins make great use of space and can go floor to ceiling, create an alcove for furniture, increase storage area, and yes even help to display your stuff. Built-ins can add style and charm to your space (This Old House).

FRONT DOOR APPEAL

BHG

One of the easiest ways to add curb appeal to your home is to paint your front door. Your front door is the natural focal point of your house. Paint it a bright color or add a bit of cottage charm with a coast color palette. In addition, painting the front door is one of the quickest and cheapest ways to update your home. What color should you choose? Choose aqua or robin’s egg blue for a beach-inspired home. Choose pastel blue for a cottage inspired home. Choose navy for traditional homes. Wanting to add a bit of warmth? Choose yellow, orange, or red. Yellow is always cheerful and welcomes guests all year long.
