Continuing our topic of the elements of design, today we will talk about scale, light, and color.  First, let's talk about scale. Scale refers to the proportion of an object or space to all other objects, to human beings, and the space to which it belongs. We can measure the size of an object by the length, width, and depth of its surface.    Scale means that all the elements in a room, including the room itself, have a consistent relationship to each other.

The size of the room determines the scale of the furniture.

Scale is one of the most important things to consider when mixing prints.  Make sure you vary the size of the scale in the patterns that you use in a space.

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of successful interior design.  Lighting can establish a mood, focus attention, and create illusion. Light can enhance or diminish the effects of color. Light can emphasize or reduce surface features, such as texture. Lighting provides visibility for mobility and activity.  You can create drama through the use of shadows and contrast.  Remember to use direct sunlight whenever you can because direct sunlight is the ideal light source.

Incorporate the following three types of lighting in your space. One lighting source is not sufficient in a space. All three types of lighting work together in a home.

1. Ambient or general lighting
2. Task lighting
3. Accent lighting

Finally color... Color gives life and character to our surroundings; identifies and distinguishes things for us; intensifies interest; and attracts and holds our interest.  Color is a powerful tool that projects a space's personality.  What does your choice of color say about you?
