Form follows function.  What exactly does that mean?  All of us like beautiful things but they must be functional.  When designing a space, consider the following items:

  • the function of a space
  • the needs of the people using the space
  • any special requirements
  • budget

Once the function of a space has been determined, then and only then can we think of the aesthetics of the space.  Next consider the needs of the people using the space.  Consider the ages of the people using the space.  Ask what activities will be going on in the space. Also consider if there are any special requirements for those using the space.  For example, will elderly or handicapped be using the space? What about small children?  Next, and possibly the most important, what is the budget for the space? Set priorities based on the budget.  Be realistic.

Please enjoy these beautiful and functional spaces.
